Well, Okay, Deran! We did not know that the youngest of Animal KingdomThe Cody brothers had it in him, but we’ll be damned. In Sunday’s episode (recapped in full here), he not only stepped up, he walked all on J to the point that his grandchildren will be born with footprints on them. What took Deran? And how much do we have to worry about the deteriorating mental state of Big Brother Pope? Here to provide answers to TVLine – and, by extension, to you – is showrunner Daniele Nathanson.
TV LINE | Deran fucked up took load this week. What possessed him?
Deran eventually gave up the love of his life for his family. So with J he becomes that element of “Wait, you are beautiful story me what to do? ”He’s careful now. A big part of the reason Deran wasn’t more involved in the family business in the past was because he didn’t want to be with Smurf. But now that she’s gone, so he wields his alpha power.
TV LINE | I was surprised that J let Deran push him around so much. “Do you want the money? Here. You want my combination? Here. You want me to sell my condo? Sure.”
Well J’s super, super smart, so he can see fighting over it right now isn’t really serving him. It might serve his ego, but it wouldn’t bring him any closer to Deran or, for that matter, Craig or Pope. So he’s just trying to deal with these changing dynamics.
TV LINE | I love that Pam almost laughed at Deran for bringing a gun with him to meet her. He knew then that killing her wouldn’t give him and his brothers their inheritance, so what was going on? Is he even thinking clearly then?
It is. He just brought it in in case something happened and also to show her that he was serious. Keep in mind, he didn’t know how she has been.
TV LINE | And she is damn serious, but not necessarily the kind of wrapping warmth of serious.
Exactly. [The gun] was more just for protection. Deran doesn’t know who is in his house or what’s going to happen, so he’s his replacement – to whom Pam is calling him.
TV LINE | I got the distinct impression that she liked her interaction with Deran a little. In those first few seconds, she knew who he and her brothers were and was like, “Oh, man, man.”
I think it’s fun for Pam, first of all because she’s such a confident woman, she isn’t threatened at all. And on top of that, she sees aspects of Smurf in Deran. So she’s having more fun than anything else.
TV LINE | How worried would you say we should be about Pope after his hospitalization?
He was not hospitalized, exactly.
TV LINE | Well, he was rushed to hospital in terrible condition.
True. And there is no doubt that Pope is going through something because of the loss of her mother and also of the way She went. So we should be worried, but he’s still Pope. He will get out of it.
TV LINE | In a way, it’s scarier getting him through this mental thing than it would be physical.
Absoutely. He’s always had his problems, but if he can have even less control than usual… it can be worrying not only for him but for everyone around him. This volatility means we don’t know what’s going to happen with him, neither J nor anyone else. They don’t know what’s gonna happen themselves based on that.
TV LINE | It’s no longer the Smurf’s tool, it’s a potentially weapon.
Exactly. It’s like you’re a dog handler, and all of a sudden this animal is released and no one is controlling it. Then it’s even more dangerous in a way.
