New Orleans' Pelicans star Anthony Davis said Magic Johnson's shocking start had not changed his vision of the Los Angeles Lakers as he pondered his options for next season.
Davis was at the center of one of the most acrimonious NBA soap operas of the season after submitting an exchange request in January with the Lakers, who would be his favorite destination.
The move stalled however after the collapse of negotiations between the Lakers home office, led by Johnson, and the pelicans.
Johnson surprised the Lakers by resigning his position as president of basketball operations, plunging the iconic franchise into a new crisis after another disappointing season.
However, Davis told reporters on Wednesday, April 10, during an end-of-season talk, that the chaos at the Lakers had not affected his opinion on the team.
"I have no idea what's going on there," Davis said. "What's going on with the Lakers? I have a lot of other things to worry about."
When asked if Johnson's resignation had changed the team's thinking, Davis said, "No. It's a great organization, like 29 other organizations, I have nothing to do with it. . "
Meanwhile, Davis has little revealed his plans for the future, even evoking the unlikely possibility that he will stay in New Orleans next season.
"I'm still under contract," said Davis. "I still have a year, of course, it could happen, I do not have any ill will towards anyone, I know I could be here next year too, so I can not be angry if I am here next year. "
Davis said he was waiting to see who the pelicans chose as general manager after the Dell Demps dismissal in February.
"See what happens," said Davis. "See who Pelicans do their GM and have a conversation with this person about the future.
"My time here has always been great – I like to play here." It's something that I will definitely keep in my heart, but the next step is to wait until the Pelicans fill the position. GM. "
Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry said the saga surrounding Davis and the Lakers this season was the most "toxic" episode he witnessed.
"Never this toxic, no," says Gentry. "That did not affect two teams – and two guys – one lost his job, and the other resigned from his position – so no, in 31 years, I have not had a job. there was nothing like that that would have matched that kind of spin-off. " – Rappler.com
