Anthony Hamilton, Grammy Award-winning R & B singer, filled hearts on Saturday night as he serenely sang the national anthem at the NBA All-Star Game in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The performance stirred up memories of Marvin Gaye's playoff play in a 1983 All-Star game. It almost made everyone forget Fergie's unfortunate performance in last year's game that made some players and members of the public. (She apologized later.)
Hamilton, a native of Charlotte, stopped singing this song in 2016 after former quarterback Colin Kaepernick began to kneel in the "stars and stripes" at NFL games to protest the injustices racial. At the time, Hamilton had said he was taking a break from the anthem "until it feels like it's for me."
He changed his mind earlier this year.
"I can go there … and I can be as black as I want to be, as proud as I want to be," said Hamilton at the Charlotte Observer. "I can represent for those who feel like me [and] Take what we stand up and put it back in the hymn. "
Hamilton stated that he was aiming to reach back into the music "that common bond … and the purpose of America, when it was to serve God, to serve the people and to bring the people together." Love, justice and the pursuit of happiness, man. Let's go back to that. That's what I want people to feel when they hear me. "
Hamilton is perhaps best known for his 2003 platinum album entitled "Comin 'where I am from". His favorite anthem performances are Marvin Gaye, Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock in 1969 and Whitney Houston at the 1991 Super Bowl.
