Insight editor-in-chief Kwesi Pratt Jnr. Called for open and objective discussions and analysis of the bill against LGBTQ + activities in Ghana.
He urges people to discuss issues without passion or anger.
A group of academics, lawyers, civil society organizations and professors have opposed the anti-LGBTQ + bill titled Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill because they argue that ‘it is a violation of fundamental human rights enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.
The group comprising lawyer Akoto Ampaw; author, scholar and former director of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa; the dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Ghana (Legon), Professor Raymond Atuguba; the Dean of the School of Information and Communication Studies at the University of Ghana, Prof. Audrey Gadzekpo and the fifty-year-old former Managing Director of the former Ghana Secretariat, Dr Charles Wereko Brobbey, among others, indicated that they would not allow passage of the bill into law because some of its parts violate human rights provisions in the constitution.
However, Ningo-Prampram MP Sam George and a host of NDC parliamentarians as well as a parliamentarian from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) are pushing for the bill.
The opposing group has also come under heavy criticism, with some Ghanaians claiming to be homosexual or to profit financially from it, hence the reason they do not want the bill to pass.
But Kwesi Pratt implored Ghanaians to listen dispassionately to both supporters and opponents of the bill.
Speaking on Peace FM “Kokrokoo,” he argued that those who oppose the bill are not ordinary people but rather well-read and well-educated intellectuals whose contributions should be treated with the utmost importance.
“Let us lend an ear to each of them and find ways to pass laws that will promote Ghana’s development, to pass laws that will not infringe on human rights, to pass laws that will not violate our constitution; this is the task that awaits us. No name calling, no passion, no hatred and so on! “, he stated.
