The WHO has declared Covid-19 a pandemic and Ghana, by law, has quickly declared it a public health emergency responsibly.
The virus threatens the world’s population, quickly depletes them and ravages economies.
Covid-19 has caused the state to suspend our constitutional and fundamental human rights with lockdowns and privacy-invasive laws.
Covid-19 has imposed laws that have seen people lose their jobs and their livelihoods. Healthcare professionals and workers have taken risks that even kill them.
Stores have been closed for violating security protocols. People, especially poor hawkers, have been arrested by the hundreds to face the criminal sentence of GHC 12 to 60,000 and / or 4 to 10 years in prison.
Our MPs thought this was the way to protect people from Covid-19. We have passed laws requiring mandatory quarantine for those who test positive.
Mr. Speaker, irresponsible members of Parliament represent a danger to themselves and to all of us.
They have no rights that deserve to be protected. Stop warning and threatening to disclose their identity if they continue to attend Parliament knowing they carry the virus.
The same Constitution which gives the right to privacy immediately takes that away from an individual for the common good and for public health.
By the way, the law you made for the poor is not working. She stretches and endangers the police and the hundreds that she only arrests on the orders of a president.
Obviously, they only come out to avoid the unfair anger of a president. They only come out for one day and arrest hundreds. They will need buses to transport them, police cell stadiums to hold them and process them for court stadiums and prisons. What easy way to spread Covid-19?
This is why the police have instead started to mount campaigns to sensitize and educate people about the virus and the need to observe preventive protocols, including wearing a mask. There are really many who really cannot afford a mask and cannot be encouraged to use their handkerchiefs or a cloth for protection.
The few times they got out during the period, they arrested a total of 1,326 people on the latest charge. They succeeded in securing convictions for 175 people while others were acquitted and released.
But the police wielded the best discretion in releasing 961 giving 484 verbal warnings and issuing written warnings to 477 to stop sinning.
You paid a fine of 20.00 GHC and handed Ho a mask to wear.
The Assembly adopted this wise, humane and easy-to-apply regulation when the state delayed in passing a law requiring the wearing of a mask. They just reactivated it.
One-off fines breed corruption among law enforcement officials, but, certainly, the corruption will not be as much as the heartless grand rape of public funds by ungodly politicians.
Elsewhere in India, municipalities charge around $ 3 and offenders hand out a mask. This not only improved compliance and protection, but mobilized substantial funds for local authorities to step up their fight against Covid-19.
What we are doing is not working because it is inconvenient and nasty. You broke the law with impunity for the votes. Stop threatening harsher penalties.
The police are not amused. Our laws allow local authorities to make regulations for such situations.
It is your legal light.
