The All Progressives Congress released the names of the Rivers bench justices apparently used to issue “black market” injunctions against him by desperate state politicians.
They are Judge Opufa Ben-Whyte, Judge Okogbule Gbasam, Judge Chiwendu Wogu and Judge Fiberesima.
The APC, in a statement signed and released by its spokesperson, Chief Ogbonna Nwuke, in Port Harcourt, said the actions of these judges largely contributed to the false impression across the country that the judiciary of Rivers has become a notorious trading post where court rulings are bought. and sold.
The APC revealed that it has petitioned the aforementioned judges who degrade the integrity of Rivers’ judiciary to the National Judicial Council, NJC.
The statement read in its entirety:
“We promised earlier that we would publish the names of the judges who play with the law and constantly betray the oath of office they have sworn to uphold.
“These judges appointed by the current administration, who in many cases have allowed themselves to descend into the arena of justice, are Judge Opufa Ben-Whyte, Judge Okogbule Gbasam, Judge Chiwendu Wogu, Judge Fiberesima and another.
“As a result, the APC has petitioned those judges who are young on the bench, but appear to be playing a script, to the NJC. We urge the NJC to invite these judges for questioning without further delay.
“We are not the only state of the federation to have included clauses on injunctions in its statutes. To our knowledge, judges have been repeatedly called upon by higher authorities to exercise their discretion in issuing such interim orders.
“We are appalled that the heads of courts in some states, including Rivers State, have been summoned as a result of the activities of these judges.
“These judges are really the ones who should have been invited to face the CNM.
“In this context, we urge the NJC, which is appalled by the conduct of some judges across the country, to call on these Rivers State judges to answer for their heinous acts.
“Likewise, we also urge the Chief Justice of Rivers who may not have a hand, given the independence that judges enjoy, to give up and ensure that the erring judges who have a penchant for making bread-and-butter decisions are not allowed to do so at the risk of the brand image of the entire judiciary.
“Likewise, we have noticed that in addition to granting injunctions, these judges are now resorting to a new tactic of ordering the maintenance of what they consider to be the status quo.
“Our position is that such orders from the referenced judges, which order the parties appearing before them to maintain the status quo, are an indirect means of issuing a restrictive injunction without actually saying it.
“While we further commend the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the Nigerian Bar Association for what they are doing, we believe their efforts to clean up the Augean stable should be extended to Rivers State. ”
