To further promote HTML5 as the future of web graphics, Apple has opened the door to public extensions. Although introduced to developers in June, Safari 5.0.1 can now be downloaded. The Cupertino, California-based company has also opened its Safari Extensions gallery, joining the ranks of Firefox and other extended browsers at Basic Browser.
Bing, Twitter and the New York Times are among the first extensions available for Safari. "We're excited to see so many great developers creating great extensions and we think our users will like to be able to customize Safari," said Brian Croll, Apple's vice president of product marketing, OS X.
Safari extensions are built with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript Web standards. They are available for download at extensions.apple.com.
