Apple will re-enable group calls that were closed after a security breach in its Facetime service next week with a software update.
The iPhone group apologized Friday to users and thanked the family of a teenager who had discovered the mistake. The problem has already been solved on Apple servers.
This vulnerability could have allowed other users to spy unnoticed. A caller can listen to the called party even before answering the call. You had to quickly add your own phone number through the group telephony function during the end of the call. In addition, the called phone can also switch without warning on a video call if it presses instead of accepting the call disable button or volume buttons.
According to media reports, the teenager and his mother had already tried to report the mistake last week. But they have not progressed in many places, they said. Apple reacted on Tuesday after the vulnerability became more widely known. The company has now claimed that its developers had disabled the feature immediately after figuring out the error.
Meanwhile, the New York prosecutor is investigating the case of Apple. It was also a first complaint related to the known accident. A Texas attorney went to court with the accusation that the vulnerability could have been heard during confidential conversations with clients.
The group call feature, which allows to add up to 32 users, became available end of October with version 12.1 of the iPhone system iOS added. First of all, it was not clear if the software error existed since that time.
For Apple, it was a painful glitch because the iPhone group is currently promoting full encryption and security of its services. Facetime is only available on Apple devices.
