Smartphone battery explosions occur from time to time, and the most recent case concerns an iPhone 6 that exploded in the hands of an 11-year-old girl. The device did not hurt, but burned a blanket and scared the people involved. Apple is already investigating the incident and will replace the defective unit with a new one.
"I was sitting and I had my phone in my hand, then I saw sparks flying all over the place and I just threw it on a blanket," Kayla Ramos said. 23ABC News. "I was right here on the bed and the phone managed to burn that blanket and make those holes," said the girl.
Kayla's mother, Maria Adata, called Apple tech support a day later. He was asked to send pictures of the phone and send the device back to Apple. The company also informed Adata that a new iPhone would be shipped to her as soon as she would return the damaged device.
"It could have been my child," Adata said. "My child could have been burned and could have been more hurt, and I'm glad she's okay."
"I will not sleep with her next to me," she added. "I know we charge him a lot maybe who caused him, maybe he overheated."
Kayla, meanwhile, saw the glow of hope in the story. "It was not so bad," said the girl. "I mean, I've been able to spend more time with my sisters and my family." Fortunately, no one was hurt in this case.
It is unclear why the iPhone exploded and the unfortunate accident can be explained in various ways. As scary as it may seem, some phones can ignite in rare cases, and as long as it's about isolated incidents, you do not have to worry about the security of the iPhone 6.
The iPhone 6 was launched in 2014 and Apple has sold tens of millions of units since then. Many of them are still used after all these years.
The Galaxy Note 7 is the only phone called back because of the risk of fire. Its defective battery caused several explosions and fires in the weeks following its launch.
