Oh, the era when veteran mobile phone Motorola peddled the slender Razr while its competitors had bricks. Fuck these young noses like Apple and their iPhone doo-hickeys. Motorola, maker of the Verizon Droid, is now sold by Apple. Cupertino, California, sold 8.4 million iPhones, compared to 8.3 million handsets for Motorola based in Schaumburg, IL in the second quarter.
Of those 8.3 million, 2.7 million were Android smartphones, on which Motorola will likely depend more and more as it evolves into a world where smartphones will dominate the mobile phone market.
What a fall for Moto. When Apple delivered its first iPhone in 2007, Motorola released 35.5 million handsets. The phone maker is now trying to rebuild itself with a range of Google-centric products.
This is not the first time that Apple has dubbed a competitor. Apple has long since replaced Microsoft's Windows Mobile in the smartphone market. Although Apple's pace is slowing down somewhat, the iPhone and Android seem to be the only smartphone platforms to show growth.
