Apple announced Tuesday 600,000 pre-orders for iPhone 4, a number "much higher" than anticipated by the company.

In a short press release, the company said the extremely high demand had caused many system malfunctions and had been apologized for the difficulties encountered and the frustration.

Yesterday, Apple and its operator partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 copies of Apple's new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders ever made by Apple in a single day and was much higher than expected, which resulted in many malfunctions of the certification system. Many clients were refused or abandoned the process, frustrated. We apologize to all the people who have encountered difficulties and hope that they will try again or go to an Apple store or to a carrier once the iPhone 4 is in stock.

Earlier, AT & T announced that it had received 10 times more iPhone pre-orders than last year's iPhone 3GS and suspended pre-orders.

"Given this unprecedented demand and our current expectations regarding the inventory levels of our iPhone 4 when the device will be available June 24, we suspend the pre-order today to respond to orders already received", said said AT & T spokesman Mark Siegal, New York Times. "The availability of an additional inventory will determine if we can resume taking pre-orders."

Radio Shack also suspended pre-orders, it's said on Twitter.
