A senior lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Dr Kingsley Adjei, has urged President Nana Akufo-Addo to consider appointing certain Members of Parliament (MPs) in the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC ) as ministers if he wants to be successful as president.
Speaking on Angel FM’s morning show, An? Pa B? Fo ?, the UCC speaker said this should be part of the government’s strategy to reduce tensions between MPs and help promote consensus.
“Most governments undertake larger projects in their second term. Therefore, if I am asked to advise the president, I will tell him to select certain members of the NDC, even if not of the Parliament, to lead certain positions in order to break the winning system takes all… ”, he said -he declares.
He further called on the government to consider a multidimensional approach to the development of the country.
The political and security analyst said it was necessary if the government is to seek to have a meaningful impact in all aspects of the country’s economy.
This statement was based on his realization that the Akufo-Addo government was focusing more on the education sector to the detriment of other sectors of the economy.
This will not lead to the same level of development expected by the country.
“If you want to change, there is something called multidimensional change or multidimensional development. This ensures the improvement of the economic sector, education and agriculture among other sectors, at least… ”, he said.
Dr Agyei also called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to reduce the number of ministers to at least 70 or 80 during his second term.
He argued that the more people appointed, the less the number of people involved in parliamentary business affects their effectiveness.
“Between 2016 and 2020, there were too many ministers. When the number is this huge, it becomes difficult to follow up. Some departments could be merged. I think he should reduce the number of ministers to 80 or 70 with MPs while taking into account the current tension in Parliament.
“If he increases the number of ministers to 100 or 110, the majority of those appointed will come from the House and this will affect the passage of bills unless there is a strong consensus among the members.
