Ras Kuuku and Kofi Kinaata
While a section of Ghanaian musicians and fans gloat around their nominations at this year's Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, others are harbading and complain about their absence.
The annual awards program, now in its twentieth year, has been constantly criticized by artists, fans and critics for being "partial" when it comes to rewarding hard-working and deserving artists and producers – and this year is no exception.
The nominees were announced last Friday. Prior to the announcement of the nomination, some categories were announced in batches, giving fans a clue to the overall nomination.
King Promise, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy led the nominations this year with nine leading mentions, followed by Sarkodie with eight.
To be honest, most categories are small, but there were some hurdles to highlight.
Kwesi Arthur
Kwesi Arthur, one of the most accomplished artists of the year, received several nominations, but his name was missing in the ultimate category: "Artist of the Year". He had the hits, was featured on hits, got the biggest brand contract and had his first BET Award nomination, but was snubbed into the highest category. Apart from that, he was snubbed into the "Rapper of the Year" category while he was one of the best rappers in 2018.
Medikal
Another hard-working and successful musician of the year has lost his name in the "Artist of the Year" category. Many predicted his name in the first category, but that was not part of the nomination committee's plan.
Ras Kuuku
One of this year's biggest rejects is the reggae / dancehall category. Ras Kuuku, who partially dominated the reggae / dancehall fraternity of the year in review with the remix of his hit song "Wo" featuring Kofi Kinaata, "Valley of Death" with Tinny, "I Believe" and " I Love You, "was completely absent from all categories, including the" Reggae / Dancehall Artist of the Year ".
Jupitar
Despite his efforts in the reggae / dancehall fraternity, Jupitar was completely snubbed. He released some riddims and met Kuami Eugene for his greatest song of 2018, entitled "Eternity". But he was ignored.
Gadam fantasy
The year 2018 was a gradual year for Fancy Gadam after winning the song award of the year the same year. He started the year with a collaboration with "Client" and collaborated with Mr. Eazi and Mugeez. However, he was completely ignored in this year's awards.
Becca
The signatory of the Zylofon Music label did not release mega hits last year but was one of the influential personalities whose impact was felt. His song "Nana", which stars Sarkodie, was accompanied by a clbadic video. The category "Best Video of the Year" was announced without his name.
Kofi Kinaata
Without a doubt one of the best songwriters in the country, Kofi Kinaata's Zero nomination at this year's VGMA was a shock to his fans. "The Whole Show" – a beautifully written and recorded highlife song that dominated the year was not in the "Record of the Year" category. "Malafaka" – another Kofi Kinaata song has no place in this year's awards.
Edem
Edem, one of the legendary legends of rap, which had a major impact last year, was canceled. His hit song "Fie Four", which partially dominated 2018 for its arrangement and emotional touch, did not even fit into the category of composers.
New Artist of the Year / Unsung Category
This category is especially for promising musicians. It recognizes new working artists, however, this year's list has ruled out some key rising stars. Twitch, Kofi Mole, Yaw Berks, Amerado, Krymi, Tulenkey, Jetey and LJ were among the rising stars but were completely shunned.
