Jofra Archer was not selected for the first Ashes Test, confirmed English captain Joe Root in Birmingham.

Archer has been coaching with England this week, but organizers have chosen not to choose their 24-year-old World Cup hero. Veteran fashion designer James Anderson returned to Test XI at the expense of Olly Stone.

England XI for the first test: Rory Burns, Jason Roy, Joe Root (c), Joe Denly, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad and James Anderson.

As expected, vice-captain Ben Stokes and explosive drummer Jos Butler are back after missing the win of 143 victories over Ireland last week against Lord at the expense of General Sam Curran and scoundrel Jack Leach.

Root Batra at No. 3 where he scores 40.47 on average over 40 innings compared to 48 points less, Joe Denly ranking No. 4.

Archer had been injured at the World Cup in England and had spent a week in Barbados to recover from the unforgettable final.

He made his return to cricket last Friday in a clash between the T20 and Susbad at Hove before joining the England team for the first test.

Perfect hair and loose sweaters: Australians lift the lid on the biggest posers

The English coaches, however, supported the experienced trio Anderson, Broad and Woakes for the first game of the hit series.

"Jofra is coming back from a pretty serious injury," Root explained Wednesday. "Looking at the conditions, we chose the attack that we think would be best with 20 wickets."

Root is captain of England tests since July 2017 and was in charge when Australia found the Ashes 4-0 on his soil 18 months ago.

The 28-year-old said his team had learned a lot from the experience gained from the defeat of the Ashes and that it now commanded a versatile outfit that aimed to climb the cricket test tops.

"As a team, we have come a long way in the last two years," said Root.

"We have many more options, especially with the ball, we can go from different angles.

Australians turn back on XI, England confirms change

"We have struggled to get away from home in recent years and we managed to win a difficult tour in Sri Lanka.

"We feel that we are building a great momentum as a team and that we are slowly coming to what we want, which is the world No.1.

"All this in mind, I feel we want to continue with this progression and it's obviously a huge series.

"(The team has) a good mix of youth, inexperience and great experience with people like Jimmy (Anderson) and (Stuart) Broady.

"So, I think we are well prepared, but that counts for nothing from the first ball."
