Carrie Jernigan bought every pair of shoes at a site in Alma and plans to donate nearly 1,500 shoes to students before the start of the school year.

Jernigan told CNN affiliate KFSM that she had had the idea of ​​her young daughter, who asked her if she could buy a pair of Avengers themed shoes for her loving clbadmate. the superheroes and whose shoes were too small.

She jokingly asked the saleswoman how much it would cost to buy the store. The employee seized the opportunity.

"I could see his face, his wheels started spinning," Jernigan told KFSM. "She asked," Can I have your number? "

She made purchases and left, and later that day, she received a call from the district director of the store, who accepted the mbad sale. She said she expected to recover between 200 and 300 pairs, but a new shipment more than tripled the loot.

To pay for the piles of shoeboxes that have invaded their homes, Jernigan's family is organizing a gift for the new school year in August so that families can buy new shoes for their children.

She is grateful that her children accompanied her to Payless that day, she said.

"It just keeps telling me that their heart is in the right place," she said.

Payless filed for bankruptcy a second time in February and announced that it would close its 2,100 stores in the United States and Puerto Rico in February. The company continues to sell to Amazon and its 750 international sites, according to its website.
