The Ghanaian armed forces claim that the suspected armed thieves arrested in Kasoa using a military vehicle are not soldiers.
In a press release, they identified one of the suspects Isaac Appiah Kubi as a civilian driver of the armed forces who took advantage of the military vehicle in his possession to aid his accomplices in a criminal act.
“Our preliminary investigation shows that the suspected suspects were not GAF soldiers.”
The men were arrested for seizing money, tools and vehicle keys from sand winners.
“The GAF considers his action very reprehensible and will take measures to discipline him in accordance with our rules,” part of the statement said.
They were brought before the Ofaakor District Court and charged with five offenses, including conspiracy to commit a crime, namely theft, causing harm, banning the activities of land guards and public demonstration of arms.
The suspects include Ampaw Oduro Kwame, who is said to be a dismissed soldier, Isaac Appiah-Kubi, Emmanuel Arthur and Basit Sulley.
The Ghanaian armed forces have warned the public against impersonating soldiers by using military equipment without permission.
GAF has said it intends to punish these imitators severely with the law when they are arrested.
“We also wish to reassure the general public that GAF will assist the civilian police in their investigations into this matter and that any uniformed personnel or civilian employee found guilty will be treated in accordance with our regulations.”
