The Sudanese army is expected to make "an important announcement," state media said Thursday after months of protests against longtime president Omar al-Bashir.

"The Sudanese army will soon issue an important statement. Wait for it, "said a television presenter, without giving more details.

The demonstrations, which erupted in December, became the main challenge of Bashir's three decades of rule.

Thursday marked the sixth day of a provocative sit-in in front of the army headquarters, which also houses Bashir's official residence and the Ministry of Defense.

Crowds of protesters spent five nights in the sprawling complex, singing and dancing to revolutionary songs.
Will the Sudanese protesters agree to negotiate with Omar al-Bashir?

Hiba Morgan of Al Jazeera, from the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, said security was present on the main roads of the city.

"There are many military trucks around the capital and in the main streets of the city. Most roads have been blocked, especially those leading to Army HQ. Some roads were opened for the protesters who participated in the sit-in, "Morgan said.

"People are extremely happy even before the army makes an announcement. People celebrate and flock to the sit-in area. The protesters say they are very confident that Bashir will resign, "added Morgan.

The group responsible for the nationwide protests urged residents of the capital to gather in front of the headquarters of the army.

"We are calling our people from all over the capital and region of Khartoum to immediately go to the sit-in zone and not leave before the next statement," said the Sudanese Professionals' Association.
