Martin Odegaard’s loan transfer to Arsenal is reportedly set to be agreed after the midfielder ruled out joining Real Sociedad and Ajax.

The 22-year-old is in desperate need of more playing time after being excluded from Real Madrid squad after suffering an embarrassing Copa del Rey loss to Minnows Alcoyano on Wednesday.

This will be the Norwegian’s fourth loan spell away from the Bernabeu after joining the club at the age of 16 in 2017.

The midfielder enjoyed success at Real Sociedad last season, contributing seven goals and nine assists in all competitions.

Sociedad was in the running to get his services again but, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Odegaard chose Arsenal rather than return to Sociedad.

The youngster has also reportedly decided not to join Ajax.

The deal is reportedly close, with the midfielder keen to join Arsenal in the hours to come, after the Gunners and Los Blancos continued to negotiate overnight.

Arsenal technical director Edu started talks last week, football.london reported on Friday, and convinced Odegaard to move to England after speaking with his father Hans and agent Bjorn Tore Kvarme.

The report claims the six-month loan deal should not include a call option and is similar to the deal they made with Dani Ceballos – who is also on loan from Real.

Real have given Odegaard the green light to leave for the remainder of the season and, according to ESPN, he was cleared to skip training on Friday.

The LaLiga club have a good relationship with Arsenal after loaning out Dani Ceballos with the midfielder, who also reportedly helped encourage Odegaard to take the step in order to have the chance to play.

Talk to EFE, Ceballos added: “I can tell you what happened to me in Madrid. I’m not sure exactly what’s going to happen with Martin Odegaard, but it’s obvious that any player who wants to be successful at Madrid is going to seize the opportunity that is presented to him.

Odegaard has only made nine appearances for Los Blancos this season, with seven La Liga appearances and two Champions League games so far.
