Arsenal have signed a permanent contract with Norway international Martin Ødegaard from Real Madrid, the Premier League club announced on Friday.

The midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at Arsenal, making 20 appearances in all competitions and scoring twice, most notably in a 2-1 victory over north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal have not disclosed financial details of the transfer but the fee is said to be £ 34million. Ødegaard becomes the Gunners’ fourth summer signing after the arrivals of Ben White, Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said of the Norwegian: “A lot of things he brought last season, he made us better, we needed more options and alternatives for creativity He’s still a very young man, but he already has a huge amount of club experience and has unique talents for the way we want to play, so I’m really happy that the club made the effort.

Ødegaard joined Real at 16 and became their youngest player, but only made 11 appearances in all competitions, starting six games.

The 22-year-old will not be available for Sunday’s game against Chelsea as the club await visa clearance, they said.

Arteta has also confirmed that the club are close to making a deal with Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. “There is still paperwork but his medical exam is done, a few more things to sort out with Sheffield,” he added.
