Arsenal manager Unai Emery insists he is willing to be "patient" to engage players of comparable quality to William Saliba's, as he is not ready to settle for second choice.

Saliba had an outstanding season for Saint-Etienne in his last match, making 16 Ligue 1 appearances. The 18-year-old center-back would be on the verge of signing an agreement with Arsenal.

Tottenham was about to land Saliba earlier this summer, but Saint-Etienne President Bernard Caiazzo confirmed that the young man would sign for Arsenal before being loaned to him for the 2019/20 season.

According to information in France, Arsenal would have agreed to pay £ 28 million for the signing of Saliba and France 's International Under – 20 will pbad a medical examination with the Gunners on Tuesday.

When asked if he was happy to wait for Saliba for a whole year, Emery replied, "Really, I'm patient because we want to choose the best solution.

"Some players are very expensive and we are waiting for that opportunity. We do not want to go to the second line of players now, "he said.

& # 39; We are waiting. We have very good players. We have very good young players.

"We are also aware that we need to improve some players on this team but only, I want to sign one, two, three or four players only if we can be sure they will improve our team.

"There are many names. The club works, Edu is very close to me and Raul [Sanllehi]. We speak every day. Here we talked with the Kroenke family.

"I want to send a message to all our supporters – we are very happy to be here with a lot of Arsenal fans and we are very impressed – we work and prepare and we want to make the best team possible.

"Our ambition and motivation is for all fans."
