Asamoah Gyan, captain of Ghana, fears for his participation in the next Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, said the Black Stars had all that was needed to win this continental title, even without him.

The fitness of this 33-year-old has been a topic of discussion recently, having missed the last 10 games of Ghana.

At club level, his injury problems, combined with a loss of form, forced him to replace 10 appearances and to score a goal for the Turkish club Kayserispor in Super Lig this season.

"Ghana can win Afcon without me," Gyan told Asempa FM.

"The Ivory Coast won without his talisman Didier Drogba [in 2015] so it is possible.

"However, I would like to leave a legacy as a player.

"The only thing left for me to do is win the Afcon."

The veteran striker, top scorer in Ghana's history and the most-capped player with 51 goals out of 106 internationals, remains optimistic about his good health for Afcon from June 21 to July 19.

"I will work harder at the club level and I will do my best to stay in shape," said Sunderland's former ace.

"It's the most important thing.

"When a player is in shape, he is able to do a lot of things, so I'm looking forward to standing before and during Afcon."

Ghana will look for its fifth continental title – which will be its first in 37 years – at the tournament.
