Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology Kwame Nkrumah, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene and Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) inaugurated a commission of inquiry to investigate disturbances at the university campus last year.
The three-member commission is chaired by Justice Rose Owusu, a former Supreme Court justice.
Other members include the very reverend Ama Afo-Blay, former director general of the Ghana Education Service (GES), and David Adu-Osei, regional director of the National Investigation Bureau (BNI). Ashanti.
Mr. Kofi Owusu, Clerk of the House of Chiefs of Ashanti Region, was appointed Secretary of the Committee.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu, in an address to the University Council Hall in Kumasi, stated that the Committee had been charged with investigating this incident and determining all the circumstances, immediate and remote, that had led to the demonstration.
On October 22, 2018, KNUST, the country's first tertiary institution in the field of science and technology, was temporarily closed when displaced students organized a violent protest, destroying badets worth several thousand Cedis Ghana.
According to the students, this action was intended to protest what they claim to be persistent ill-treatment inflicted by the authorities.
This incident is considered the most violent demonstration ever undertaken by University students since 1966.
Asantehene said the committee was expected to make the necessary recommendations to help prevent such an event in the future.
It was also essential to inform the authorities on the way forward when they were confronted with such issues in order to preserve the administrative and academic integrity of the University.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu reminded stakeholders that the legislative duty of all universities was to fulfill their mandate to train leaders and not an undisciplined crowd.
The committee should therefore strive to work in accordance with its mandate in the interest of all stakeholders.
Nana Effah Apenteng, Chair of KNUST's Board of Directors, is badured of the unwavering support of the committee members.
Judge Owusu, for her part, stated that the Committee was committed to carrying out the tasks entrusted to it with diligence and transparency.
It advised those who would appear before it to endeavor to provide the members with all the information they need to fulfill their mandate.
