Substitute Marco Asensio has left the bench to give Real Madrid a crushing 2-1 win over Ajax in Amsterdam on Wednesday amid controversy VAR.
To say that Real has taken a chance in the first half would be a euphemism. The dynamic hosts completely dominated the first 45 minutes and had a lot of chances as well. Dusan Tadic thumped the wood with a sublime volley, while Frenkie De Jong was denied by Thibaut Courtois at close range.
The discussion took place about five minutes before the break, however, when Nicolas Tagliafico seemed to give Ajax a deserved lead after Courtois had turned Matthijs De Ligt's head just so the referee could run him. following a re-examination by the VAR that Tadic was slightly offside.
The pain of Ajax was exacerbated when Karim Benzema scored the start of the match – his 60th goal in the competition – at the hour of play after a maze led by teenage sensation Vinicius Junior, but the Dutch matched by Hakim Ziyech to stage an intriguing final.
The quality of Madrid was finally at the rendezvous when Asensio seized the victory for Real and allowed the holders of the ball to control the meeting. The two teams will meet in Bernabeu for the second leg on 5 March, when Ajax will have everything to do.
