The Ashanti region saw a 20.4% decrease in fires in the first half of this year compared to 2020.
Deputy Fire Chief (ACFO) Henry Giwah, acting regional commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), said a total of 622 fires were recorded between January and June this year, compared to 749 recorded in the during the same period last year. year.
The incidents involved domestic, industrial, vehicle, institutional, commercial and bush fires.
ACFO Giwah, who was addressing a press conference in Kumasi, said nine people died in fires in the first half of this year, while three were killed in recorded cases last year. during the same period.
The estimated cost of these outbreaks, he said, covered tens of thousands of Ghanaian cedis, adding that more than 150 people suffered injuries to varying degrees in the incidents.
ACFO Giwah has warned that fires of any form could be devastating if measures are not put in place to reduce their occurrence.
He affirmed the determination of the GNFS to continue to involve stakeholders to reduce the fires to an absolute minimum, thus avoiding the negative consequences that ensue.
He called on the public to avoid attacking firefighters, as happened recently in some Zongo communities in the region.
“It is unfortunate that some of our men and firefighters have been attacked in the performance of their duties for no justifiable reason,” lamented the acting regional commander of the GNFS.
The problem, he said, has been officially reported to the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) for the necessary action to be taken.
