England ended its memorable summer by winning a 2-2 draw in the Ashes with a 135-point loss against Australia in the fifth test.
On a beautiful sunny day at The Oval, England imposed 399 victories on Australia and convinced them by 263 to play the game to their oldest enemies in a year when they won the World Cup for the first time times.
Australia keeps the urn won in 2017-18, but misses a first win in England since 2001, while a series on the ashes is drawn for the first time in 47 years.
England has added 16 from 313 to 8 at night, or 329, leaving Australia with the need to win the highest race in the ashes test since 1948.
Under relatively favorable conditions for the stick, Steve Smith had the slightest chance of finishing his prolific summer with a stroke of extra genius.
It's consternation, then happiness, when Smith turns Stuart Broad into a Ben Stokes diver plunging to 23, his lowest score in the series by 57 points.
England was still stuck by Mathew Wade's combative century, but after his loss to Joe Root, the last three wickets dropped for four points. The victory was completed by the superb shot of Josh Hazlewood by Root.
This means that they ended the reign of coach Trevor Bayliss by a win, while both teams have 56 points and find themselves in the fourth-place joint World Test Championship.
Ends and beginnings
Even though the Ashes were already gone, Captain Root challenged England to begin preparations for the Under 2021-22 tour in this match.
They were helped by Australia's decision to run first, with a selection of strange teams and loss of jack, but also won with a knockout by Joe Denly and Jos Buttler. as well as an incisive bowling attack.
If Broad was to remove David Warner for the seventh time in the series, the magnitude of the celebration inside The Oval was exceeded only when Smith fell.
There was Jofra Archer's duel with Wade, complete with crosswords and long stars, and another magical moment when Root took his wonderful catch as the shadows lengthened.
No doubt it was England's dream to lift the World Cup and the Ashes, but being crowned world champion for the first time and drawing with Australia will be considered a success.
Nevertheless, the successor of Bayliss has an immediate job to accomplish: finally, define the best possible order, make the most of Root as drummer and captain, and decide on the best makeup for the attack, starting with the tour in New Zealand in December.
Brilliant Broad leads England to the home
Broad was born again this summer, leading the attack in the absence of James Anderson and ending the series with 23 wickets – the first English bowler to have taken more than 20 in four separate games against # 39; Australia.
He had already removed the stump of Marcus Harris with a wonderful delivery before turning his attention to Warner, the man he had tortured all summer.
The third goal, Rory Burns, was won by Warner with 95 points in 10 innings, the lowest score of any game played in any of the five-game cricket history series.
The crucial moment, however, was the elimination of Smith. After a summer where he accumulated 774 points and England exhausted all imaginable plans, one finally worked.
Broad's delivery to the hips was round the corner, where Stokes, who was waiting for him, grabbed the ball just above the field.
When Pat Cummins joined Wade to take 15 more points, the prospect of an arrival Monday was developing. Only Broad was able to come back and find the edge of Cummins, marking the beginning of the end.
Wade defies England after Smith's last shot
Smith had crossed the World Cup and the beginning of this series had been booed by the English crowd for its role in the sandpaper scandal.
When he left the fold for the last time, it was at a standing ovation, The Oval, recognizing that Smith's genius was the deciding factor in the final destination of the ballot box.
By that time, Wade was already in his stride, arriving with the intention of using his feet and throwing himself particularly into the spinner of Jack Leach's left arm.
Wade and Archer are teammates with the Australian team Hobart Hurricanes, but the bad mood seems to return to an exchange on the field during the fourth test.
Even as he approached the century, Wade was uncomfortable in an exciting spell where Archer was touching 95 km / h and, after pbading three figures, the left-hander cast caution to the wind.
He survived a missed staple, a slide chute and was successfully knocked down, before he finally managed to overtake one and get caught by 117 for Jonny Bairstow.
In the next match, Nathan Lyon converted Leach into the right leg, and from the next ball, Root's mid-wicket took Leach 4-49 off Broad 4-62.
"Australia deserved to keep its ashes" – what they said
Former English captain Michael Vaughan: "Australia deserved to keep the ashes.
"England must celebrate the fact that a few days ago, Australia has kept the ashes and we all expected Australia to win this week.
"With the ball in particular, they were exceptional."
The captain of England, Joe Root, addressing TMS: "I thought we were brilliant, to bounce back after a very difficult and moving week, to come play the way we did it, the team has plenty of character.
"It was more of a model for the future, it's a step in the right direction and I'm very proud of everyone's efforts over the summer."
England man of the series Ben Stokes: "It was disappointing to know that we could not recover the ashes, but we came here with a lot of pride and we wanted to draw the series.
"I may come back on my Headingley victories in good years, but I'll trade that against a win against the Ashes."
Australian captain Tim Paine at TMS: "The urn is what we came for, we knew that the rules around the Ashes and a draw are enough, it's an accomplished mission, it's fantastic."
"I do not think we ran out of fuel, we were downplayed and we gave up our catch."
