England has left bowler Jofra Archer of his team for the first Ashes Test against Australia at Edgbaston from Thursday.

Archer, who has yet to test, has been Britain 's leading window taker in his successful World Cup campaign.

Chris Woakes is favorite on his court after winning 6-17 in the win against Ireland last week.

The Englishman James Anderson, the box office taker, missed the match against Ireland due to a calf injury.

Anderson will lead an attack that also includes Stuart Broad, versatile Ben Stokes and non-spinner Moeen Ali.

The rest of the team is as expected, with captain Joe Root qualifying for a spot to beat three behind openers Rory Burns and Jason Roy.

With Joe Denly batting four, Root has risen to break a trio of players who have only 11 selections.

On his decision to return to number three, after having already indicated his preference for the four-man stick, Root told BBC Sport: "It was completely my decision.

"It's an opportunity for me to arrive earlier in the country to spread my experience, it's a great opportunity for me to cement this place and make it mine.

"After being captain on this side for a while, I feel able to juggle his head and juggle his head on the ground and batting."

Jos Buttler, who, like Stokes, was resting against Ireland, is back in the middle, with Jonny Bairstow being ranked seventh.

Archer was born in Barbados to a British father and qualified to play in England in March.

After the World Cup, he had an injury to one side and returned to Barbados to rest.

He returned to play Friday, taking two wickets for Susbad in Twenty20 Blast.

"Jofra is coming back from a serious injury," Root said. "We looked at the conditions and went with what we thought would be best to take 20 wickets here.

"It always gives him the chance to be 100% fit, this will be monitored throughout the week."

Australian captain Tim Paine refused to name his team, saying the match would be announced Thursday.

Drummers Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft are expected to play their first tests since their ban for their involvement in a balloon falsification scandal against South Africa in 2018.
