Ashley Cole admits that he is coming out of his comfort zone to play for buddy Frank Lampard in Derby.
Free agent Cole joined the Championship Rams for a contract until the summer.
The left-back is now targeting a promotion with his former Chelsea teammate, Lampard, whose team is sixth in his first season as a boss.
Cole, who won 107 caps in England and 13 major trophies, was a free agent after leaving LA Galaxy in November.
Cole, 38, said, "I had a conversation with Frank a month ago.
"He said, 'Would I be interested in coming here?'
"I stayed in touch with Lamps and could see how well the team was playing and followed Derby.
"For me, it was obvious to come here and, hopefully, to promote it.
"But it's going to be a challenge.
"I have not played in England for five years and it's a good league with strong players.
"So, I'm getting out of my comfort zone.
"I could have stayed in MLS and relaxed, but I wanted to come here to fight for a promotion, which would be great for the club, Lamps and me.
"I would not be back to too many other teams."
Cole and Lampard were teammates at Stamford Bridge for eight years.
Cole added, "I have respected him so much since I played with him and for what he did in a short time here, it was fantastic.
"He is now my boss and it's not like I've been here to take shortcuts.
"I have to lower my head, train and work hard."
