In a study of more than 1,000 healthy people, about 250 people were taking aspirin for five years to prevent a heart attack, stroke, or death, but they were 43% more at risk of a major haemorrhagic episode.
This means that about one person treated with aspirin out of 200 could expect significant bleeding.
Dr. Sean Zheng, of King's College London, said in the Journal of the American Medical Association: "There is insufficient evidence to recommend systematic use of aspirin in prevention heart attacks, strokes and death from cardiovascular disease in people without cardiovascular disease. "
Professor Stephen Evans, of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: "For healthy patients, taking aspirin has a slight benefit for the prevention of heart disease, but also for at least one prejudice in terms of bleeding. "
