PanARMENIAN.Net – Recent research has linked the regular use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, to longer survival in some people with head and neck Cancer, News Medical Today reports.
The researchers proposed the completion of a clinical trial to test the efficacy and safety of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for this purpose.
They suggest that the effect they observed is probably due to the fact that NSAIDs reduce prostaglandin E2, a molecule that promotes inflammation.
An article on their discoveries is now in the Journal of Experimental Medicine.
Cancers of the head and neck are cancers in which tumors develop in the nose, sinuses, larynx, throat and mouth.
In most cases, tumors appear in the thin, flat squamous cells that form the tissue wall. For this reason, they are called squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck (HNSCC).
In the United States, people with HNSCC make up about 4% of all people with cancer. These types of cancer also tend to have a lower survival rate than many other types.
Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, sun exposure and infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV) are the major risk factors for bad cancer.
