Henry Nana Boakye, national NPP youth organizer, berated Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu for his comments on the Cape Coast High Court ruling on the Assin North parliamentary elections.
The High Court, chaired by Judge Kwasi Boakye on Wednesday, July 28, 2020, annulled the 2020 parliamentary elections in the Assin North constituency and called for new elections in the constituency.
The court invalidated the election of the Member of Parliament for Assin North by pointing out that Mr. James Gyakye Quayson “who still considers himself as a Member of Parliament is a total violation of Article 94 (2a) and the court should declare his election null and not avenue “.
The decision is in line with a petition from a resident of Assin Bereku in the central region named Michael Ankomah-Nimfa who challenged the MP’s victory in court.
He sought to overturn the member’s declaration as the winner for allegiance to Canada when he ran for office.
Reacting to the tribunal’s decision, the Hon. Haruna Iddrisu described the judiciary as being manipulated to “tip the balance of power”.
“We in the minority remain steadfast, we are convinced that this is our seat and will remain so.
“But it is worrying that we do not want to believe that Ghanaian courts have been captured and turned into forums used surreptitiously to tip the balance of power and weaken the proven historical notion of checks and balances.
“Justice must not only be done but must clearly be seen to be done,” argued Haruna Iddrisu.
Responding to the minority leader, lawyer Henry Nana Boakye called Haruna Iddrisu’s words “shameful and unparliamentary”.
According to him, he did not expect such unfortunate statements from the leader of the minority, a man he respects a lot.
“His comments yesterday were outrageous and unparliamentary. You see, you belong to the leadership of one arm of the government. You are a minority leader and another arm of the government is doing its job but you say the NPP is manipulating the court. to tip the balance of power; very unhappy on the part of a whole minority leader. I have a lot of respect for him. He is a great lawyer and he knows how to talk. I admire him but these statements from his part are inappropriate, ”he said.
He criticized the NDC and the minority for flouting the courts, saying “the attempt to smear the judiciary from the NDC quarters is so bizarre”.
