Aston Villa has signed a contract with Jota from its rival, Birmingham, for an undisclosed price.

The 27-year-old Spanish striker has signed a two-year contract with the newcomers to the Premier League. He met at Villa Park with Dean Smith, who was also his director at Brentford.

Meanwhile, Villa Gary Gardner midfielder made a permanent transfer in the opposite direction for an undisclosed amount.

Gardner, 26, was loaned last season to Blues, but has just signed a three-year contract with St Andrew's.

"I worked with Jota in Brentford. He is a superb and talented player and Birmingham signed him as a record transfer, "Villa Smith's manager told the club's official website.

"I'm really happy to see him coming back to work with us. He has great skill, a good balance and an excellent eye for goals and badistance. "

Jota joined Brentford from Celta Vigo in 2014 and moved to Birmingham three years later. He made 32 appearances in his first season at Blues, scoring five goals.

Last season, he played 40 times in the league – seven times as a substitute – and found the back of the net three times.

Gardner, who went through the academy at Villa and made his debut in December 2011, played several times with Jota last season for Blues, after starting 39 league games for Garry Monk's team.
