Athletics: Australia seeks to grab sprinter Kiwi Eddie Osei-Nketia

Athletics Australia is trying to convince Eddie Osei-Nketia, sprint star from New Zealand, to bring green and gold to the international level.

Nketia, 17, defeated Rohan Browning and Trae Williams to win the men's 100m at the Australian championships.

Nketia spent eight years in Canberra before returning to Wellington last year to finish her studies.

He is also considered an excellent rugby prospect, although the 10.22-second victory in the Australian 100m on Saturday night highlighted his remarkable potential as a sprinter.

AA's performance director and coach Christian Malcolm, NZ Athletics high performance manager Scott Goodman, and his father, Gus, will meet later Sunday to prepare for his immediate future.

Prior to the June Oceania Championships, Nketia must decide whether to represent Australia or New Zealand at the international level.

Once this call is made, he is unable to change his nationality until he is 20 years old.

After finishing second behind Nketia in the 100-meter final, 21-year-old Browning tweeted, "Great Eddie's great race, I hope AA will do everything to keep it in this country."

If Nketia chose Australia, he would be added to an impressive 4x100m relay team, also including Browning, Williams, Jack Hale and Jake Doran, all of whom ran below the 10.20 mark.
