Cbadiel Ato Forson, spokesperson for the Minorities in charge of finance, asks that the Ghanaians be jubilant in front of the announcement of the reduction of the import duties in the ports.

He questions the latest government policy announced Wednesday by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, describing it as "populist".

At a public meeting organized by the government's economic management team, the Vice-President revealed that the reference value of everyday consumer goods had been reduced by 50% and that of vehicles by 30%, as of Thursday, April 4th.

According to Mr. Bawumia, this initiative was aimed at ensuring an increase in the volume of imports by the country's ports rather than by neighboring countries.

According to him, available data show that traffic in the port of Lome, for example, has increased by about 300% between 2013 and 2018, while that of Ghana has increased slightly by 4% over the same period .

But Ato Forson, who speaks for the minority on finance in an interview with reporters, reminded Ghanaians of the wild jubilation that greeted the 2017 budget when the government removed the rights to spare parts.

He pointed out that the enthusiasm of the spare parts vendors was short-lived because the policy in force did not reduce the cost of clearing goods in the ports.

"Abossey Okai will reproduce," he predicted, "I will ask anyone to go to the port and clear your goods."

He added: "So, tomorrow, go clean your car. I'm expecting a 30% discount. If you do not get a 30% discount, then, again, he lied.

According to Ato Forson, Bawumia would have been "overtaken" by the finance minister in his recent statement to parliament, leaving the vice president nothing to say to Ghanaians but to information already known.

"He has very little to say, he looked more or less like reading a speech about the state of the nation, that HE the president had come to pronounce.

"I find that it is mediocre, in fact it is the mediocracy at its peak, I did not see anything substantial … you could see lies, lies".
