The jailbreak of the iPhone 4 is one of the easiest ever. Just visit the jailbreakme.com web page in Mobile Safari, swipe the "Drag to Jailbreak" slider, and install the unofficial Cydia App Store app on your device.
But this has a price. The jailbreak exploits a wide open security hole that could easily be exploited by malicious hackers. Malicious sites that install malware could exploit the largely unknown and uncorrected security vulnerability.
Note: The security flaw in Mobile Safari is not caused by the jailbreak of the device. It is already there on all iOS devices, jailbroken or not.
Apple is sure to investigate this exploit and quickly publish an update. In the meantime, here is a quick fix that you can install yourself:
The JailbreakMe method is based on a PDF vulnerability in iOS: the iPhone automatically downloads PDF files and the jailbreak code is included in the FlateDecode PDF feed section.
Note: There is a security vulnerability in Mobile Safari that can be exploited, whether you have jailbroken your device or not. Nothing prevents malicious websites from using the same method to install unpleasant software on your iPhone – which could be used in all sorts of criminal and disturbing ways.
This fix does not solve the problem, but a warning asking if you want to open a .PDF file appears. If you trust the source of the PDF file, click "Load". Otherwise, on "Cancel".
Download this .deb file from Will Strafach (@cdevwill) and open it on your iOS device with the help of iFile, a file manager that can be installed with the help of Cydia. Double tap the .deb file to install it.
