Attacks on health workers risk losing control of Ebola

HHealth care workers know that treating the Ebola virus puts them at risk. The virus is very contagious and often deadly. The feverish security situation in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo also requires extreme caution.

However, premeditated attacks on individuals and institutions providing care for Ebola patients were not part of the contract. They are now.

At the end of February, in two Ebola treatment centers, nurses hid with patients while outsiders burned their generators, medical equipment, vehicles and buildings.

Charity organizations Médecins Sans Frontières and Alima, despite their extensive experience in war zones, have withdrawn staff from these areas. More recent attacks make it unlikely that they will return in the near future.

The already overburdened World Health Organization is filling the gaps, but will reach the breaking point if the epidemic continues until 2019 or extends beyond that region, or if another public health problem major is declared.
