Attahiru takes office as new army chief, Buratai bows out

The new Army Chief of Staff, Major-General. Ibrahim Attahiru, took over the leadership of the Nigerian army in a handover ceremony developed by his predecessor, the lieutenant general. Tukur Buratai, Thursday in Abuja.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari announced the appointment of Attahiru on Tuesday alongside other department heads.

NAN reports that, in keeping with the tradition of the Nigerian military, the outdated army chief decorated his successor with the insignia of the office and handed him the function set.

The withdrawal parade for Buratai will take place on Friday.

The overwhelmed Army Chief of Staff (COAS) Buratai, while giving him the leadership, thanked God for his successful service to the nation and Buhari for finding him worthy.

He urged the new army chief to ensure that the Nigerian military remains professionally responsive in carrying out its constitutional duties.

Buratai said the military in his custody has ensured that democracy is supported and protected, urging his successor to ensure that the military continues to be loyal and professional.

He also urged Attahiru to remember him for improving the professionalism of the Nigerian army, improving the responsiveness of the army in the region, training the administration and logistics needs of the army. and responsiveness to Nigeria’s democratic imperativeness.

“I am proud to say that the Nigerian military has transformed to become professionally responsive in defending democracy with the utmost loyalty.

“Today we have a professional response army and we have accomplished a lot in many areas over the years, as well as interagency cooperation.

He congratulated the main staff officers, corps commanders, the commander and directors for their cooperation while he was chief of the army.

He also appreciated all the troops serving in all operations both at home and abroad, including Operation Lafiya Dole, Sahel Sanity and Delta Safe, among others.

Buratai said that as SFOC he was proud to have stood up for the country’s democracy and called on the officers and men of the Nigerian military to make it their duty to defend and protect democracy.

In response, the new SFOC pledged to support the Nigerian military’s giant leap under Buratai, adding that he considered himself lucky to have had the opportunity to succeed Buratai.

Previously the Chief of Policy and Planning, the Lieutenant-General. Lamidi Adeosun, said the former CoAS came, saw and conquered, adding that working with Buratai was a rewarding experience.

Adeosun, while praising the virtues of Buratai, said he had accomplished so much for the Nigerian military in terms of operational efficiency, staff well-being and the creation of new units and formations.

He said the military under Buratai has made good progress in research and development as well, especially in local hardware manufacturing.

He said he was convinced that the new army chief had what it took to continue the great spectacle left by his predecessor.

Adeosun congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing a worthy successor in the person of General Attahiru and congratulated Buratai on his successful dismissal after years of meritorious service to the nation.
