WELLINGTON, New Zealand – Auckland International Airport Ltd. announced that it will begin work on a new US $ 700 million home terminal early next year, as progress in New Zealand’s Covid-19 vaccination program builds confidence in a possible recovery trips.
The terminal, which was suspended early last year due to the pandemic, will be built next to the international terminal to allow easier air links. It should last about five years.
Auckland Airport, which is New Zealand’s main international gateway, said it was encouraged by the rise in vaccinations against Covid-19.
“This means we can start to look at the current situation and anticipate the resumption of air travel,” the company said.
“We probably have more certainty in our ability to plan now than we have had in the past 18 months since the start of the pandemic,” he said.
The New Zealand government is aiming to vaccinate all adults in the country of five million people this year, which should allow some relaxation in its border closure. So far, approximately 795,000 people have been fully immunized with the two-dose Pfizer vaccine.
Auckland Airport said its other infrastructure plans, including a second runway and a new international arrivals area, remained on hold.
