At this point, it’s not even fair to call electric vehicles the future. It is only a matter of time for them to supplant combustion vehicles. As an example, look at this drag race between an Audi Q7 V12 TDI and an Audi E-Tron Sportback.
The Q7 is equipped with a 6.0-liter V12 diesel engine producing 493 hp (368 kilowatts) and a torque of 738 pound-feet (1,000 Newton-meters). A six-speed automatic transmits power to an all-wheel drive system. This model is part of Audi’s Heritage fleet.

The E-Tron Sportback has two electric motors totaling 405 hp (302 kW) and 490 lb-ft (664 Nm) of torque. While EVs tend to be heavy because of their batteries, this one weighs 190 kilograms (419 pounds) less than the Q7.
The first drag race looks like it’s going to be close. The E-Tron gets a bad launch and the Q7 is able to score an easy win. However, the second and third attempts show that it was a fluke as the EV had two wins.
The difference is even more noticeable when running from a roll. The E-Tron doesn’t have to deal with gear changes and is ahead of the Q7. Above about 100 miles per hour (161 kilometers per hour), the acceleration of the electric vehicle slows down and the diesel is able to get by. These are immediate speeds in jail anywhere off the highway, so we can’t call that a win for the Q7.
The brake test has a surprisingly close result. The E-Tron wins, but the gap between it and the Q7 is very small. The difference is particularly surprising, as the electric vehicle weighs hundreds of pounds less than the diesel crossover.
The E-Tron seems to get even better in the future. Rumor has it that the next mid-cycle refresh will feature an improved battery and more efficient electric motors. These adjustments are expected to debut in the second half of 2022.
