Dwighty boy is finally back in the universe "The Walking Dead"! Austin Amelio made his first appearance on "Fear TWD" in the Sunday episode after leaving "TWD" more than a year ago in season eight.

"It feels good, that sounds very natural," Austin Amelio told INSIDER after returning to the role of the former Savior.

The last time we saw Dwight in the eighth final of the season, he went looking for his wife Sherry. He is still searching for it and his research has brought it to Texas. It's a bit like a homecoming for Amelio who lives in Austin, Texas, with his family.

INSIDER spoke with Amelio on Wednesday afternoon to find out when and how he learned that he was heading towards "Fear" with Lennie James, how he kept the secret of his return in the "nightmare". "TWD" universe for a year, how he could have planted Scott M. Gimple for his possible crossover, and more.

Leave the series eighth season and how Amelio hinted that he would have put Dwight on the fallout

Daryl gave the keys to a truck to Dwight and told him to leave and find Sherry.

Kirsten Acuna: I want to go back a bit because I have never been able to ask. How long did you know you were leaving Walking Dead at the end of the eighth season?

Austin Amelio: I mean maybe just a few episodes before we finish the season.

Acuna: D & # 39; AGREEMENT. And have you ever thought or knew that there was the possibility of coming back?

Amelio: No, but I have a funny story. I heard that "Fear The Walking Dead" was going to Texas and I was joking with Scott [Gimple] maybe a few months before. I was like, it would not be funny if Dwight was going to [“Fear”]. You know, I'm here so I tried to go down.

I was wondering if it would be funny if Dwight went through? And we laughed at both of them. Then suddenly, two episodes before ending the season [of ‘The Walking Dead’]He called me to say, "Hey, how are you feeling, go to Texas and do" Fear "?" So, I do not know if this seed … He probably forgot that to be honest. I think it made sense for my character to go there because of the scenario.

Acuna: It's a bit funny.

Amelio: Yeah that's it.

Amelio had to keep the secret on the move to "Fear" for about a year

Amelio told INSIDER that he really wanted to talk about his big comeback to someone, but he waited.

Acuna: Until where was this plan in place? When did you discover it?

Amelio: I discovered around Atlanta Walker Stalker. [That’s] when I received the call. I do not know when it was. I would say maybe a month before or something like that.

Acuna: D & # 39; AGREEMENT.

Amelio: And then I had to keep the secret for a year.

Acuna: Was it difficult?

Amelio: It was really difficult. I was snacking. I just wanted to say to someone, especially when you make these conventions, everyone goes "Well, where is Dwight?" Where did he go? What's going on? You know? And sometimes you will have a longer conversation and someone will take you by surprise by asking me questions and you almost slip the answer and you will have to hold back. It's a bit difficult, you know?

Acuna: Of course. I was at Walker Stalker New Jersey [in December 2018] where you suggested that we can see you again.

How much time has pbaded since the last time we saw Dwight in "The Walking Dead"

It's been about a year since we saw Dwight for the last time.
Gene / AMC page

Acuna: Do you know how much time has pbaded for Dwight since we saw him for the last time in "The Walking Dead"? He tells June and John-

Amelio: About six months.

Acuna: D & # 39; AGREEMENT. I thought it was maybe a little longer than that, as he told John and June that at one point he had been looking for Sherry for at least a year, but he does not really seem safe .

Amelio: Maybe it's a year, it could be a year. Is this what I say in the episode?

Acuna: It is.

Amelio: D & # 39; AGREEMENT. Then I guess it's a year.

Acuna: We will go there with a year. I always try to follow the deadlines. That's why I asked.

What has Dwight been doing for about a year since we saw it: not much

Sherry is Dwight's wife. This is what Dwight looked like before Negan hurt his face.
AMC

Acuna: Do you know if Dwight was doing anything else that year since we saw him or was he just trying to get Sherry?

Amelio: Effectively searching for his wife, as an addict trying to find his next fix.

Acuna: It is now a long time in the series and for a single person. Should we expect Dwight to be a little different from the last time we saw it in terms of behavior and character?

Amelio: It is in a much darker place, I think.

How was it to film the darkest and most exciting moment of the episode with the sword

Dwight is planning to put a weapon in his head.
AMC

Acuna: Yes, since you are talking about it, there is a dark moment with Dwight in the episode of Sunday when he considered shooting himself in the fire. How was this moment to film?

Amelio: It was really good because Colman Domingo, [who plays Victor Strand], realized and he is an actor director. One of the best things you can do as a director is to allow the actor to do what he wants with the scene. And he would do that every time and say, "What do you know? Go over there. Wherever you want to go, let's see it, go to the end. Then, if it's too much, we can bring it back.

He just let me do what I wanted with this little piece and it was really fun. I mean, as sad to do that, but it's part of the game and I've had a good time.

Acuna: Yes, I thought it was one of the highlights of the episode. One of the other moments that really struck me is when you hold the ax and John pulls to kill two walkers at the same time. How was it to film this scene? Did you just hold an ax with a body on you?

John rescues Dwight in a terrible moment for the Sunday episode.
AMC

Amelio: Yeah yeah yeah. The other thing is that I was hit in the shoulder. So, raising the ax was an extreme agony for Dwight. So, I've somehow played that. Then having this great walker on me was almost a kind of rocky moment. I really enjoyed it and it was a cool little gag that we had.

Amelio: I have never seen this in the show before.

Acuna: Also.

Amelio: I thought it was pretty creative.

The first scenes shot by Amelio for "Fear TWD" and how it was to work with other alumni of "TWD", Lennie James

John and Dwight start badly, but end up working together.
AMC

Acuna: We see each other first in episode 3 with Jenna Elfman and Garrett Dillahunt. Are these the first scenes you shot for "Fear the Walking Dead"?

Amelio: Yes they were.

Acuna: D & # 39; AGREEMENT. And then, how was it to be with other former students of "Walking Dead," Lennie James? You have never really played on "The Walking Dead".

If you wonder why Morgan and Dwight did not kiss, that's because they did not really know each other about "TWD".
Ryan Green / AMC

Amelio: We have never done scenes together. You know, it was really, really surreal. It was surreal to see him here. It was surreal to see [director] Mike Satrazemis was here. And then, shoot a scene with Lennie where we both see each other for the first time. Everything was so surreal. I love Lennie James to die and to be able to shoot that, it was really fun. It's really fun to play that.

Acuna: Yeah. I kind of wanted you to hug her at first, but I realized you did not really know you in The Walking Dead.

Amelio: Yes, we do not do it.

Whether or not Dwight will find Sherry and what's next for Dwight in "Fear"

Sherry left "The Walking Dead" in the seventh season after blowing Daryl out.
Gene / AMC page

Acuna: At one point in the Sunday episode, Dwight says that he does not think he'll find Sherry, but what do you think?

Amelio: I think we find it just in a dark place. Obviously, his hope must be infinite. He must have an infinite amount because he's been in this search for so long. Part of the reason why you see him in the car getting a gun to his head is maybe because he thinks she does not want him to find her because of it. Man in whom he has become. So, he falls a little weak in his thoughts for a moment, but obviously, there must be hope. There must still be some hope.

Acuna: Yeah. I hope we can see it at some point. What can you tease about for the upcoming Dwight character? It seems that this group wants to help him find his wife Sherry, but Dwight might well embark on something else.

Amelio: Well, there are some other scenes that appear for Dwight later in the season and obviously, you will not see Dwight playing the same notes throughout the season. He will fight for other things and really start paying attention to him. And this is going to be really crucial for his career and his arc of character.

There are many surprises to come. We shoot [season five, episode 15] now and this season is beautiful. I can not wait for people to see it. It's really fun, full of action and a lot of twists and turns. It's going to be awesome.

Fear TWD Group Connection to Negan Saviors

Dwight was one of Negan's trusted men.
Gene / AMC page

Acuna: I do not know if you understood it, but I noticed it because Dwight was part of the Saviors, a group of people wanting to save people. As for John, June and their group, this whole season has been dedicated to helping people and saving people. I thought that they were almost saviors in their turn. But very different from the Saviors of which Dwight was a part.

Amelio: Yeah I think so. The main difference is that there is no Negan. There are people who really want to make a difference and do it in the safest way possible. And let others know how they approach it. Yes, absolutely. There is certainly an aspect to that.

Acuna: Yeah. I thought it was funny that Dwight had found other people who were doing what Negan might have done.

Amelio: Yeah yeah.
