Australian testing captain Tim Paine will undergo surgery to repair a pinched nerve in his neck in a bid to get fit for the next Ashes series.

Paine experienced discomfort in his neck and left arm from a bulging disc, which limited the intensity he can train to and has not responded to previous attempts at treatment.

A spine surgeon recommended surgery to relieve pressure on the nerve during a consultation last week and the procedure will take place on Tuesday. Paine hopes to be able to resume training later this month.

“The consensus of the spine surgeon and the medical team at Cricket Australia was to have the operation now, which will allow enough time to fully prepare for the summer,” said Paine, the first test of the ash due to start in Gabba on December 8.

“I think I can resume physical activity by the end of this month and resume full training in October. I will be ready to take the first test and look forward to what will be a huge summer.
