The number of fully immunized Australian children has reached a record high, with nearly 95% vaccinated against deadly diseases.

New data for the March quarter show that five-year immunization rates are 94.78%, up from 94.67% in December.

Australia has one of the best child immunization rates in the world, with the latest figures well above the 85% global vaccine coverage.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said vaccination saves and protects lives, so it's important to continue to promote the benefits of vaccines.

"The latest figures show that the vast majority of parents hear the message about the benefits of immunization and I am delighted that our public health campaigns and vaccination programs protect all Australians," he said Sunday.

Immunization rates also continue to increase for children aged 1, 2 and 5, with Victoria and Tasmania reporting better than the national rate.

Coverage rates for five-year-old Aboriginal children are 96.66%, far exceeding national figures.
