Author Colson Whitehead on "The Nickel Boys" and fantasy against realism

The latest novel by author Colson Whitehead, Pulitzer Prize winner, "The Nickel Boys" – is based on the true story of a Florida Panhandle boys' reform school, which has become famous for its horrible abuse. Jeffrey Brown recently spoke with Whitehead to explain why the subject had attracted him, the choice between realism and fantasy in his books, his evolving career, and his concerns about the American cultural moment.
