Ms. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the designated Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, called on Serbian investors to come and invest in Ghana.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs designate made this appeal on Tuesday when Mr. Djura Likar, Serbian Ambassador to Ghana, paid him a courtesy visit in Accra.
She noted that while bilateral trade between the two countries was modest, she hoped it would improve with the entry into force of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), which would create a huge market of 1 , 2 billion people, an opportunity. Serbian investors to explore new opportunities on the African continent, with Ghana as an entry point.
She urged Serbian investors to profit from the development, identify their areas of interest and use the favorable business environment in Ghana as a stepping stone to access the continental market.
She mentioned the need for countries like Serbia to act as advocates for developing countries like Ghana to gain access to affordable vaccines in the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic which has hit the economy hard. global and said it was up to countries to use traditional friendships to fight the pandemic together.
Ms. Ayorkor Botchwey further commended the government of Serbia for its continued collaboration with Ghana and vital support to Africa on the very important issue of UN Security Council reform.
She recalled that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had played a key role in the processes leading to the Ezulwini Consensus and expressed the hope that Ghana would continue to count on the support of Serbia to achieve consensus and to work in close good direction.
She said Ghana looked forward to working closely with Serbia on the issue of revitalizing the work of the General Assembly during the negotiations of the upcoming 75th session.
Ms. Ayorkor Botchwey recognized the excellent tradition of cooperation and mutual support for applicants for positions in various multilateral institutions and expressed hope that the two countries will continue to cooperate and support each other in this regard.
She said that in the spirit of the aforementioned tradition, she called for the support of Ghana’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the period 2022 to 2023 and Ghana’s candidacy for membership in the United Nations. United Nations Council on Narcotic Drugs for the period 2022 to 2025 as well as for membership in the International Narcotics Control Board for the period 2022 to 2027.
The Foreign Minister designate reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthen the warm relations between Ghana and Serbia for mutual benefit.
She noted that the friendship and cooperation between Ghana and Serbia, especially in recent times, has been marked by the exchange of notable high-level visits such as the visit to Belgrade of the former Speaker of the Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye in 2018 and the visit to Belgrade in 2019 by herself as Minister of Foreign Affairs, testify to the growing exchanges between the two countries.
She expressed the hope that high-level visits would increase in the coming years to facilitate closer cooperation and give new impetus to joint efforts to deepen and broaden relations and cooperation in various fields for mutual benefit. of the Ghanaian and Serbian peoples.
Ms. Ayorkor Botchwey thanked the Government of Serbia for its continued support for the development of human resources in Ghana through the provision of Serbian Government Scholarships to Ghanaian students to pursue various university and postgraduate programs in Serbian universities.
She congratulated the Serbian government on the 12 scholarship places offered to Ghanaian students for the 2021 academic year, for deciding to extend the application deadline for Ghana and said that the Scholarship Secretariat of the Ghana was working diligently to submit the names of the selected beneficiary. students to be submitted to the Serbian authorities.
She congratulated Mr. Likar for taking the time to come to Accra to sympathize with the family of the late Mr. Steve Mawuenyega, who until his death on January 12, was Serbian Honorary Consul in Ghana.
She said that the late Mr. Mawuenyega, during his tenure, worked diligently to strengthen the relations between the two countries, which have been long-standing, warm and cordial since the establishment of diplomatic relations in the 1950s.
Likar suggested creating a friendly parliamentary group between the two nations as part of strengthening their relations.
He said his government would continue the scholarship program to enable more Ghanaian students to study in Serbia.
