Salaga South Mp Large Abubakari allegedly accused Kamara of inflating the costs of the contract in the Vice-President's residence

The Accra High Court has sentenced Ibrahim Dey Abubakari, former member of parliament of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of South Salaga, to donate 1.5 million GHD to a former national security adviser, Alhaji Baba Kamara, for having defamed him.

Abubakari allegedly accused Alhaji Kamara of inflating the contract costs for the renovation of the vice presidential mansion and pocketing the money intended for a water supply project in Salaga.

He also claimed that the former national security advisor had hijacked state vehicles and other objects for his personal use.

Dissatisfied with the words of the former lawmaker, Alhaji Kamara, on March 20, 2017, sued him and also sought a continuing injunction preventing him from continuing to make defamatory statements about him.

Abubakari responsible

After more than two years of judicial struggle, the court, chaired by Judge Patience Mills-Tetteh, declared Abubakari responsible and ruled that the former MP intended to deliberately pursue Alhaji Kamara.

In addition to damages, the court also sentenced Abubakari to 5,000 GH ¢.

"Incivility is gradually infiltrating our society; people make bad reports about other people on our airwaves without verifying the authenticity of the facts and this must be controlled; the officials of this country must be lifted and respected after the services rendered to this country. It is not fair to accuse wrongdoing when there is no way to prove that they have committed these offenses.

"Our country should not encourage the dissemination of false news and provocative vocabulary on our airwaves, as this could cause irreparable damage to the image of the people being discussed. It is not profitable to use words to tear up people in authority, "said the presiding judge in her ruling.
