The suspect, aged 42, first declared in crowded court that she had a nine-month-old baby at home and that she was also pregnant.
However, as soon as Judge Abena Agyin Doku informed Rose Fiaku, a seamstress, that the police should take a pregnancy test for confirmation before the next adjournment date, the accused quickly changed her story.
She said: "Please, one of the police used his leg to hit me in the stomach, which caused miscarriage," spontaneously exclaimed the crowd: "Eii! You lie!"
The suspect, who was charged with stealing a child, was on the dock with her boyfriend, Lawson Lartey, 33, facing a prison charge.
Rose Fiaku pleaded guilty but Lartey denied any wrongdoing.
The judge then put them in prison to reappear on April 5th.
The suspect managed to steal the one year old baby from his mother around 4:30 pm in front of the Market Circle post office in Takoradi last Friday.
She first posed as a client and asked the mother to allow her to take care of her two children so that she could better serve the clients.
Fortunately, a closed circuit television (CCTV) camera from some of the area's banks captured the woman, who was cuddling the baby as she walked away from the market.
