Back from the quarter finals of the 2019 Nations Cup of Nations, Bafana Bafana drew Ghana to qualify for the 2021 edition in Cameroon on Thursday.
The South African team of Stuart Baxter surprised everyone by coming out first of his group in Cairo, then beating Egypt in the last 16 days to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Bafana sank 2 to 1 after a late goal from William Troost-Ekong.
They will have to qualify for the 2021 tournament by eliminating Ghana, Sudan and the winner of the playoff match between Mauritius and Sao Tome and Principe.
In his last clash against Ghana, Bafana sank 2-1 at the 2015 Africa Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea.
But the Black Stars were eliminated in the 2019 event in a 5-4 defeat at penalty shoot-out against Tunisia, after the match ended 1-1 in overtime.
Finalists Senegal will face Congo, Guinea Bissau and eSwatini in the 2021 playoffs. Their opponents on Friday night, Algeria, led Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
Qualifications for the 2021 group stage will begin in November.
