George Bright Anni Bansah, Chairman of Hohoe Constituency, National Democratic Congress (NDC), described the election of Mr. Alban Bagbin as Speaker of Parliament as a “victory for democracy” in Ghana.
Mr. Bagbin was elected to the country’s third highest office to run the affairs of Ghana’s eighth parliament in the Fourth Republic.
Mr. Anni Bansah, in an interview with the Ghanaian News Agency (GNA), revealed that Mr. Bagbin’s skill was what prompted some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus to vote for him in the secret ballot.
The President said he was saddened by the events that took place in Parliament, which were widely condemned.
“Everything that happened in the general elections was manifested in the election of the Speaker of Parliament.”
Mr. Anni Bansah said the election of Mr. Bagbin would put the country’s governance on the right track.
He said there was a need for consultation, dialogue and compromise without “bribes, influence and inducement” from MPs (MPs).
He urged men of God and Christians to pray that the judges of the superior court “use the wisdom of God to rule”.
Mr. Emmanuel Bali, National Democratic Party (NPD), 2020 parliamentary candidate for the Hohoe constituency, told the GNA that the election of Mr. Bagbin was a plus for the country.
He said his election would ensure the effective checks and balances, adding that Parliament’s decisions would not be solely up to the government of the day.
Mr Bali added that the President-elect’s experience as a former Member of Parliament assured him that Mr Bagbin would be able to run the business of Parliament as expected of him.
