DHAKA (The Daily Star / ANN) – Authorities have detected more than 1,250 cases outside the capital, indicating that the disease was spreading across the country.

The number of patients infected with dengue in different districts is increasing alarmingly, indicating that the disease is spreading rapidly in the country.

More than 1,250 dengue patients have been identified in Chattogram, Feni, Dinajpur, Mymensingh, Kishoreganj, Brahmanbaria, Narsingdi, Nilphamari, Tangail, Barishal, Jenaidah, Khulna, Pabna and Bogura.

Most of the patients went to Dhaka before the diagnosis of dengue fever, health officials said.

In Feni, the authorities have so far diagnosed 147 patients. Only four of them had not gone to Dhaka recently, said the civilian surgeon Hayutuzzaman.

Registrar Partho Protim Debnath, of Khulna Medical College Hospital, said the number of dengue patients was increasing day by day. "We are fighting to welcome them. We also need more dengue detection kits. "

With few exceptions, most district public hospitals can detect and treat dengue patients.

But in the city of Barishal, neither Sher-e-Bangla Medical College nor any private clinic has received a dengue virus detection kit.

The Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and the Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital in Dinajpur have set up a permanent dengue diagnostic service.

Health officials in Mymensingh said they had provided NS1 kits, needed for diagnosing dengue fever, in 11 Upazila health complexes in the district.

Officials at most public hospitals in major cities said they were able to treat dengue patients.

At the same time, health advocates at Chattogram said that many private clinics were charging exorbitant amounts for diagnosis.
