Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu said the La Liga should play three games outside of Spain a year.
Plans to play Girona's home match against Barcelona last month in Miami have been dropped due to a "lack of consensus".
The Spanish Football Federation and the players' union have expressed their opposition to the movement.
"If we want the La Liga to be strong, we have to play in these games," Bartomeu told BBC Sport.
"At Barca, we sometimes talked to La Liga and told them that if you want to promote La Liga more and more, then we should have three games of the year away – one in America, one in the Middle East and one in Asia.
"We have to get closer to the fans, we do the summer tours in July and August to get closer to the fans, we are the ones who show our respect, going to Miami would have been a respect for our fans in the United States."
La Liga has signed a game by season in the United States under a 15-year contract with the media company Relevent. The Catalan neighbors Girona and Barcelona have agreed to move their game to the Hard Rock stadium on 26 January.
The top Spanish club has announced that it is still planning to hold a league match outside Spain.
"Of course, we strongly support the international ambitions of the clubs, because we share the same vision: to bring the La Liga closer to La Liga and make La Liga a stronger international brand," Joris Evers, head of communications, told BBC Sport. of the league.
"We are continuing to work for La Liga outside of Spain and want to do it as quickly as possible, and we are working with all stakeholders to achieve this.
"We see this as a logical next step in the growth of our league and as an obvious benefit to all involved."

Having failed to get the go-ahead for an official league match abroad, Barcelona's president, Bartomeu, revealed that his goal is to see at least three La Liga games played in Spain on three continents.
However, such projects will be firmly challenged by the Spanish Football Federation.
The objections of the Federation stem from the fact that La Liga has decided to negotiate a 15-year contract with Relevent, a media company, without consulting the Federation.
The issue is further complicated by the personal differences and dislike between the La Liga leader, Javier Tebas, and the President of the Federation, Luis Rubiales.
La Liga opposes any objection from the governing body of football in the country citing the Super Cup of Spain that took place in Tangiers in Morocco, although the Federation claims that It is a unique match rather than an integral part of the league program. .
Now, having been thwarted in their previous attempts, the bet has been overtaken from the game that was not played at the end, to talk about three games in progress.
The previous setbacks have made La Liga even more determined to concretize its projects, in particular because they feel that they have the support of clubs – especially from Barcelona – who feel the opportunity to make the brand known. Liga to new shores to win new fans, an even higher profile, new potential sponsors and certainly more money.
While Real Madrid is currently keeping its powder dry, Bartomeu in particular shows no reluctance of this type and wants to leave him in place as part of his legacy as president of the club.
The dream of the Catalan club president will undoubtedly create mbadive waves in Spain and is an additional indication of the magnitude of the changes that will be made to football in the coming years.
