Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir announced Thursday the reopening of his country's eastern border with Eritrea, closed since last year.
Bashir ordered the closure of the border in January 2018 after announcing the state of emergency in the Kbadala region, in the east of the country, in order to combat the smuggling of arms. and people.
"I have been announcing since Kbadala the opening of the border with Eritrea," said Bashir during a televised rally of loyalists in the regional capital near the border.
"Politics can divide us, but they are still our brothers and our relatives (Eritreans)," he said, without giving more details on the decision.
Last year, the closure of the border was part of a government campaign to disarm organized people who were smuggling gangs and that Khartoum had blamed the transit of migrants from the Horn of India. Africa to Europe.
Bashir's speech at the rally in Kbadala was made while he remained provocative in the face of national protests against his three-decade reign that shook Sudan for weeks.
